Once again, developing the artwork for the Royal Opera House’s upcoming Spring season was a brilliant challenge and a great opportunity.

The starting point for our third Booking Period creative was the theme of identity as viewed through a lens of a play, taking inspiration from the wide range of productions that will be performed as part of the season. Characters within tableaus, inspired by the Spring Season’s The Magic Flute and La Bayadere, overlap beneath an umbrella narrative of the transition from Winter through to Spring.

Collaborating with photographer Tim Gutt and set designer Shona Heath, our artwork toys with the aesthetic of each production – borrowing, morphing and subverting to amplify the surreal.

The artwork’s scene-within-a-scene informs the idea of a play within an “Extraordinary World”; a glimpse behind the artifice of performance that reveals another space situated somewhere between fantasy and reality.
