On Friday 15th June, all of aka’s offices internationally took part in a Big Cake Sale to support charity ShelterBox’s Big ShelterBox Week.
ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that provides emergency shelter and life-saving supplies to families around the world who are affected by disasters. Since 2000, ShelterBox has responded to earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, landslides, typhoons and conflict, delivering lifesaving aid to families across the globe by providing shelter, warmth, comfort and dignity to families at the time that they most need help.
To help support this great work, the charity has instigated Big ShelterBox Week; an annual event that’s a fund-raising focus for supporters – whether groups or individuals. Bearing that in mind, we wanted to make sure that we committed to a Big Cake Sale, asking as many of our team as possible to bake or buy cakes to sell to their colleagues. All the proceeds would then go directly back to ShelterBox.
The range of cakes on display for our first Big Cake Sale was testament to the hard work and effort that our very best bakers put into their delicacies. From carrot cake and brownies through to flapjacks and cupcakes – whether in London, Melbourne, Sydney, Manchester or New York, we were spoiled for choice. In fact the tastiness of the goodies on sale might be attributed to our annual ‘Rate My Cake’ competition, where members of the aka team bake, sample and judge each other’s culinary efforts. It was obvious that all of the talented Rate My Cake participants made a particularly special effort, no doubt perfecting their speciality!
When all the cakes had finally left the shelves (and we really couldn’t eat anything more!), we had managed to raise over £500 – enough to buy one of the life-saving boxes that ShelterBox provides to families at the time that they need it most. Containing survival necessities like a waterproof tent, cooking utensils and a gas stove, blankets, a tool box and colouring pens and activities for young children, the ShelterBox can really be a life-saver.
After the Big Cake Sale, we weren’t just feeling full – we were also feeling proud. Have a look at the below gallery to see some images of us all having fun and making a difference!
