A lesson in how to be hip(hop)

Late last year Jay-Z and Kanye West released the joint album Watch the Throne, and their collaboration is already the stuff of modern legend. As it grabbed a Grammy, topped the US Billboard chart and broke the iTunes store’s one-week sales record, it’s easy to see why we were thrilled when they brought their world tour to London. We couldn’t miss out!

On Friday 18th May we hosted a box at the O2 for a group of clients and aka staff, and witnessed the pair providing an utterly flawless live show. They performed not only the smash hit album in full but also some of their individual greatest hits including West’s All of the Lights and Jay-Z’s 99 Problems and Empire State of Mind.

The gig was also a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. Both hip hop icons took full advantage of the O2’s epic space, looking like two superheroes squaring off against each other as they rose 20 foot into the air on illuminated square platforms during the gig-intro of H.A.M. The following show was fantastic, peppered with Floyd-esque bursts of lasers; the occasional climactic fireball; and a brilliant backdrop of giant video screens playing clips of menacing predatory animals.

Running through the Watch the Throne material, Jay-Z and West proved easily why they are considered hip-hop’s current two main players, keeping everyone on their feet for two hours and ending with a roof-raising rendition of N***** In Paris.

Despite some clients accepting the invitation to the “Jay-Zed concert”, everyone left the “Jay-Z gig” on Friday a fully fledged hip-hop devotee. However, we may have been spoilt and there may not be another like it, as West bragged “If this is your first concert, it’s all downhill from here”.
